Square foot gardens are best divided into 1 square meter beds, preferably raised. Each square meter is then divided into a further
16 blocks, measuring approximately 30cm x 30cm. This allows for a variety of plants to be planted in a small garden space.
The squares can be demarcated with twine, jute or thin strips of number.
Planning is done according to a structured planning plan:
- LARGE PLANTS 1 PLANT PER SQUARE Tomato, Aubergine, Peppers, Cabbage
- MEDIUM PLANTS 4 PLANTS PER SQUARE Lettuce, Chard
- SMALL PLANTS 9 PLANTS PER SQUARE English spinach, Beetroot, Bush beans
- EXTRA SMALL PLANTS 16 PLANTS PER SQUARE Radishes, Carrots, Onions
It is advisable to have two to three planting beds to allow for succession plan. Harvest from one, one is still growing to maturity, and the third is being prepared for the next planting.
