GROW GUIDE Tomatoes

20 June 2025

width=There are a wide variety of tomatoes available on the market and there are several ways to cultivate. Either grow from seed (great if you’ve been given some heirloom seeds from your aunty Mavis upcountry whose some kind of tomato guru!) or cheat a little and buy seedlings. Buying seedlings reduces growing time considerably and reduces the risk of your week old babies being munched by some gastropodic beast with its house on its back!
Any which way, tomatoes are fairly easy to grow. They require lots of light and regularly watered soil. Don’t forget some canes or a trellis to keep them off the ground, they’ll take 8-18 weeks to ripen, depending on the variety. Nothing like a fresh Caprese salad in summer, mmmmmmm!
