WELCOME TO FEBRUARY...

Consider the water wise gardening approach (that is, if you haven’t already realized the benefits already). Here are a few more tips on what one can do in the garden in February.

Mulch, mulch, mulch! The benefits of mulching include that it reduces weed growth; it’s quick, easy and long lasting, plus it is a cost effective solution to reduce moisture evaporation and adds goodness to the soil. Save up to 60 % water in the garden by putting down a Reliance Medium Sifted Compost, Bark Nuggets or Woodchips. For more options, visit Starke Ayres Garden Centres, we have a variety of mulching solutions.

Some water wise gardening tips: Visit us in-store to choose from a variety of clearly marked water wise plants such as Wild Iris, Plumbago, Honeysuckle, Colonema, Vygies, Agapanthus, Gazania’s and many more. If you’d like to plant seeds, try Starke Ayres Water Saving Mix that contain Alyssum, Poppy, Cornflower and Cosmos seeds. A water wise gardening product we can recommend is Gardeners Gold Dust, it breaks down compacted heavy clay soil, improves water retention in sandy soils, prolongs the wilting point of plants in Summer, assist in better seed emergence, reduces excess salinity in coastal soils, prevents water runoff and erosion, helps to remove excess boron from soils and assists plants in absorbing more nutrients. Ask us in-store for more water wise product recommendations, for a water wise plant list and other tips to make your garden truly “sustainable”.

Be sure to water responsibly and adhere to the guidelines and recommended watering times. Inspect your irrigation, repair where needed, and install a Gardena timer to help you manage the prescribed watering times. Group wisely – place plants with similar water requirements in the same beds. Most plants require a decent amount of water while establishing, but water wise plants can receive a dramatic decrease in water after this period.

Plant succulents such as Aloe Lemondrops, Bushwacker, Orange Express and Little Joker that only grows to about 40 cm high. Some of these varieties are already in full bloom and in stock.

If your lemon tree leaves are turning yellow, feed with Magnesium Sulphate and Starke Ayres Organic 3:1:5. A dose of Trelmix or Starke Ayres Nutrifeed with all the essential micro elements will also improve the general condition of your lemon tree. Remember to water generously during warm spells, make sure that the water penetrates the soil to reach the roots.

• Continue planting small batches of vegetables to ensure a continued and manageable supply. Planting suitable varieties in pots, such as Tomato, Lettuce, Peppers, Chilli, Beans, Spinach, Kale and Brinjal, will make watering easier and therefore be more economical. Select from our wide range of organic seedlings grown especially for you.

• Help keep the roots of your lawn cool, by putting down a layer of Lawn Dressing. Feeding the lawn with a fertiliser high in Nitrogen such as Talborne Organics 5:1:5 or Atlantic Fertilizers Bio Ganic Lawns will keep your lawn lush and green. Organic fertilizers requires less watering than its chemical counterpart. Don’t mow your lawn too short as to protect the roots from the hot summer sun.

Protect fruiting crops from caterpillars by spraying with caterpillar insecticide in the early evening when the caterpillars start feeding. Use Kombat Fruit Fly or an organic option such as
Margaret Roberts Biological Caterpillar Insecticide or Ludwig’s Organic Insect Spray.

GARDEN CHAT ON FMR

The aim is to bring both garden and gardener into the natural realm. It is important for us to know the impact our gardens are having on the environment as a whole, so that we can play a positive role.

QUALITY PRODUCTS AND SERVICE

STARKE AYRES has been a supplier of quality seed, seedlings, trees, shrubs, pot plants, bulbs and a variety of gardening accessories to the gardening public of Cape Town for well over a century.

Aware of the fact that climatic and soil conditions in the Western Cape vary greatly from those in the summer rainfall areas of the north, we have gone to great lengths to identify plants that are particularly well adapted to the Mediterranean climate of the Western Cape.

In the garden centre plants are displayed in such a manner as to make the shopping experience an easy and a pleasant one. Customers need to know how adaptable plants are, their growing conditions and how they can be used for maximum impact in the garden.
